Dairy Products Press Diabetes Risk

Milk and other dairy products are often recommended for restricted consumption, especially those high in fat. But the latest study says dairy products contain fatty acids that can prevent diabetes mellitus.

Fatty acids, called trans-palmitoleic acid in high amounts in the body will menugrangi risk of diabetes by 62 percent. According to a study reported in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

"People that trans fatty acid content of high-palmitoleicnya also had higher levels of good cholesterol and triglycerides. This will reduce insulin resistance and lower levels of markers of inflammation," said lead researcher Dr.Dariush Mozaffarian of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard School of Public Health .

Actual palmitoleic acid is found naturally in the human body. These acids are also found in dairy products even though the numbers are small. The source of this acid that comes from outside the body referred to as trans-palmitoleic acid. Milk fat has a high acid levels are higher than non-fat milk.

Studies in animals show palmitoleic acid protects the body from insulin resistance. Similarly, in humans. But experts have not been able to find the exact cause.

For this menungkap Mozaffarian and colleagues analyzed data from 3,700 people who follow the Cardiovascular Health Study. All respondents aged 65 years and over and living in the United States.

Blood samples of the respondents checked to determine the amount of trans-palmitoeic acid levels as well as cholesterol, triglycerides, C-reactive protein and glucose levels. The respondents were also interviewed about their daily consumption patterns.

People who trans-palmitoleic acid levels appeared to have high levels of fat in the body a little. They also have higher levels of good cholesterol and bad cholesterol is low. Meanwhile, levels of C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation) is low.

And as expected levels of insulin resistance in their lower body. This means their risk for type 2 diabetes is lower.

Although the results of this study found links between milk consumption with a lower risk of diabetes, the experts who responded to this study says there is no single study that can be used to guide diet for the community.

But experts said the results of this study show that not all high-fat products is bad for health.
